Competitive spirit: PWD finalises consultant for Delhi sports varsity | Delhi News

New Delhi: Public Works Department has finalized a consultancy firm for the design and construction of Delhi Sports University.
“A consultant has been hired and we are working on the university’s design and layout, which will soon be presented to the PWD minister, Manish Sisodia, for approval,” said a senior official of the department.
The consultants will have to visualize the day of the sportspersons and provide the facilities in such a way that the students may be trained aiming for Olympic gold medals. Jogging track, swimming pool, gymnasium and other sports infrastructure needed for warming up and practice of approximately 3,000 students are being planned.
The Delhi government had floated tenders inviting bids for the consultant last year in September.
Sisodia had earlier instructed the officials concerned to ensure state-of-the-art equipment and facilities at the varsity for the highest level of Olympic training. According to the government, the objective of Delhi Sports University is to nurture and encourage the best sporting talents in the country so that the university can make the nation proud by producing medal-winning athletes.
The Delhi government has appointed Karnam Malleshwari, the first Indian woman weightlifter to win an Olympic medal, as the university’s vice-chancellor.
For the university, a plot of 79 acres at a village in Ghevra has been identified by PWD. The campus will have play courts of international standards apart from technical trainee rooms, analytical room, steam room and massage room. There will be residential facilities for students, vice-chancellors, coaches and other officials in a 20-storey building.
The campus will have an outdoor arena having sports facilities of two football grounds, two athletic tracks with practice pitches of 125 meters on each side, archery playfield, hockey turf, two volleyball courts and two basketball courts. The students can avail shooting arena, three lawn tennis courts-synthetic and three clay courts and an open amphitheatre.
The indoor sports arena will have an aquatic center with all-weather four practice pools and one Olympic size swimming pool, one diving pool with adequate number of steam and sauna stations, one multi-storey indoor hall of wrestling, weightlifting, boxing with gym facility among other facilities.
